*HORST ARTWORK

*The cover of Vogue's Summer Beauty Issue for May, 1941 exudes a carefree candor, a beach fantasy that was a welcome escape from the daily rigors surrounding World War II.

*Designed by one of the world's most acclaimed and influential photographers, German-born Horst P. Horst's (1906-1999) keen eye for form, lines, organic and geometric shapes, and color resulted in this striking illustration.

*From the playful poise of the model, to the stylish handwritten "Vogue," with its bright red beach ball "O," the cover exudes both playfulness and bold confidence. It is also an early example of a magazine cover showing story headlines to draw reader appeal.

*Horst's unforgettable vision dominated Vogue covers throughout the 30's and 40's. Besides his striking fashion plates, he soon became known for his compelling still lifes and sensual nudes.

*He has also done portraits of the grand dames of fashion and other luminaries, including Coco Chanel, Katharine Hepburn, Jean Cocteau, and Gertrude Stein.

"Dance lets me capture the lines and movements of the human body; it allows me to talk about different cultures and express feelings that cross all borders."
